PRIVATE PIANO INSTRUCTION: Developed through over 25 years of private teaching, Kevin’s method will have you playing the piano on your first day of lessons. You will also learn to read music (jazz and standard notation) and to play by ear. Student resources are provided to help you become a strong, accurate pianist.

PRIVATE VOCAL COACHING/VOCAL TECHNIQUE TRAINING: You will learn about the anatomy and usage of your voice through vocal technique training. You will also develop your style of artistry and delivery through vocal coaching. Weekly coaching/training will show you the best way to complete your daily regimen.

BEGINNERS/INTERMEDIATE BASS INSTRUCTION: Learn to play modern electric bass styles which work with jazz/blues/Soul/gospel music.

PRODUCTION/MUSICIANSHIP TRAINING: Learn to use the basic building blocks of music to create your own music. Receive instruction on working with your own Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) on Logic Pro X.

Our approach to music education is based on the foundations of music literacy and the course work of ‘The Integration of Abilities’, a curriculum developed by Dr. Paul Baker, founder of The Dallas School for the Visual and Performing Arts at Booker T. Washington High School in Dallas, Texas. The Integration of Abilities course is based on Dr. Paul Baker’s acclaimed exercises for creative growth. This course directs the students to analyze their own creative process and guides them through exercises for personal investigation and growth.

Musical literacy is the reading, writing, and playing of music, as well an understanding of cultural practice and historical and social contexts.

Integration of Abilities

Exercises for Creative Growth

This unorthodox experience in learning evolved in four decades of Baker’s classroom work. His teaching career earned many accolades including TIME magazine’s praise as “one of the most effective college teachers in the country.” Here is a highly personal, thought-provoking philosophy of creative work of limitless application to all of the arts – and life itself.

At Studio-Kevin Hamilton we’ve adopted a “Say-it, Play it approach to learning music, which makes our method a more holistic and a progressive process, rather than a linear approach.

Step I

Our student will verbalize an exercise by calling it by its name, its function, and the process.

Step II

Our student will apply their knowledge of that music exercise by demonstrating their ability to play it on their instrument. Mastery of the exercise is met when the student is able to excellently execute the exercise three consecutive times in a row.

Step III

The student will be introduced to a new skill which they will integrate into the previously learned exercise, starting at step one with the new skill. This method is progressive and it intuitively integrates the new skill as part of the function of practicing their old skill. The student is encouraged to play their basic skills every day as part of their “Daily Regimen”. Students will also apply the accumulated skills to their list of songs called their ‘Repertoire’.
